The artist spent over a year on painting the monarch based on pictures and previous paintings. In an interview, he mentions his awareness of the weight and importance which comes along with the royal’s state in the world. Her Majesty also found the time to visit the Lyric Theatre in Belfast and to meet the Deputy First Minister Martin McGuiness for the first time.
